This chat ability is designed to allow you to talk to other lowfers over the internet without any specific requirement such as ICQ or IRC similar chat programs. 

It might be useful especially if you want to have a parallel direct connection to each other while carrying out a test on longwave. If you have a relatively cheap access to the internet, this chat option might be a cheaper solution than a telephone line. Of course, I also prefer a connection over the air, but this it is not allways possible ...
